Vonage Because of the ability to use the Vonage service while traveling and from most

Because of the ability to use the Vonage service while traveling and from most other locations, I recently signed up on-line, received the Motorola VT2442 adapter, activated it, and sent it to a friends daughter who is in Japan. The problem in a nutshell is that we cannot log into the VT2442 in order to set the static IP required by her cable internet provider. The system setup is:

Cable Modem -> Vonage Adapter -> Computer (imac)

The computer can connect to the internet when connected directly to the cable modem (with the proper IP set), but nothing works when it is setup as above (no phone, no internet).

We did change the computers IP from static to dynamic, and that seems to work. The VT2442 is 192.168.15.1 and the computer gets 192.168.15.2 assigned as expected. We can even successfully ping 192.168.15.1 from the computer.

However, when trying to connect to 192.168.15.1 via a browser... nothing. The browser reports that it can't find it. We have tried everything we can think of: firewall is off, power off - wait - then back on for the VT2442, computer restarts, reset button restart for the VT2442, and probably a few other things short of a hammer that I don't need to list here.

So, the DHCP seems to work and she can ping the box, but just cannot connect to it with a browser.

We have just spent over two hours on the phone ( REGULAR long distance to Japan) with a three-way connection to the Vonage technical "support". This was in the wee hours (my time) this morning so it could be at a reasoable time in Japan. I am a bit miffed with them as we were cut off several times and when I called back we had to go through the SAME troubleshooting process that I did with the previous guy. Each time they were no help, eventually transfered us to the next level of "advanced" technical support which played a recording saying that it wasn't available and hung up.

I suspect the VT2442 box is faulty, and will probably be some time before the system gets working... at least from Japan given our experience with technical support. She will probably have to send the VT2442 back and to a replacement. If this looks like it will be a long and drawn-out process I will suggest that she just cancel the service (still within their 30-day startup) and [maybe] start over later.

Any suggestions from someone more knowlegable than me (meaning anyone)? Any similar problems with the VT2442 in trying to set a static IP?

The Vonage package with the [almost] full load of features is very attractive. Hovever, this experience with their technical support does not cast them in a very good light.
