Vonage Because if you are having issues but most people aren't then the problem exists

Because if you are having issues but most people aren't then the problem exists closer to you than to Vonage. Therefore the problem is likely with your ISP. It could be at an interconnect point but then your ISP would have an obligation to route around that bottleneck.

That is comparing apples to oranges. It goes to the very nature of real time protocols versus the protocols used for mail, file transfers or web surfing. Those protocols are slowed, sometimes imperceptibly, by retransmissions or congestion but there is no degradation in quality. Real time protocols by their very nature have no tolerance for substandard network connections.

In practice the packets only need to be prioritized until they leave your ISP. Beyond that the amount of bandwidth available should make such prioritization unnecessary. The industry has been trying to push for such packet prioritization for many years for applications like real time streaming video and Voip, but has failed mostly because of the large investment currently made in older networking equipment.

Some Voip services provided by ISPs do provide this level of prioritization. Many of them even terminate the calls on the PSTN network inside of their own networks. It is interesting that Keynote failed to include these providers in their study.

Once users can be assured of having a reliable Internet connection then Voip becomes more robust than the PSTN because it is easier to route traffic around problems. That was the original intent of the Internet as designed by DARPA. Certainly there are problems as with any new technology, but POTS is dead and almost everybody, including the ILECs, knows it at this point.

Finally, the value of telephone service is dependent on more than call quality. In addtion to cost and bundled features, some people consider the features that only Voip can provide to be important. Some of those features include SoftPhones and Virtual Numbers. Different people with different needs are going to make different decisions on value based on those needs.

Therefore, if you are having audio problems, the cause is most likely your ISP.

a) Do measurements while you are having problems.
b) Run pingplotter to get a longer term picture of line quality.
c) Ensure that your adapter has the latest firmware.
