Vonage Based on some experimentation, I have concluded that under certain circumstances



Based on some experimentation, I have concluded that under certain circumstances the V-Portal (VP) should be installed behind a router, particularly when the router is QOS capable.

I currently have Comcast with d/l speeds of ~30 MB/sec and upload speeds of ~3 MB/s. Yet, even with strong bandwidth, low jitter and minimal packet loss, people I called complained of occasional line drops. I am also confident that there is not an issue with my Motorola 5120 cable modem.

Monitoring my d/l and u/l speeds during and after a phone conversation, it became apparent that the VP was using an excessive amount of bandwidth during a phone call- with as noted above mixed results.

Further, I recently I upgraded to an inexpensive D-Link DIR 638/QOS router, which significantly boosted wired performance throughout my network, including a significant improvement to web page load times.

However, due to continuing voice quality issues and the V-Portal's excessive bandwidth use (at least with the default QOS settings), I decided to move the V-Portal behind the DIR 628 and set the later to automatic classification, rather than manually assigning QOS priority. By doing see call quality significantly increased.

Placing the VP behind the DIR 628 involved enabling remote configuration management and setting a static IP address on the VP. VP Fixed IP address settings for use with the DIR 628 were as follows:

Static IP: 192.168.0.XXX
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS (Primary and secondary) as per the rotuer device information screen.

While my results are purely anecdotal, my sense is that the VP unit is not always the best device to put in front of a router/network and that placing it behind the router may resolve some issues. Put simply- I believe the D-Link unit is a better router and I have more confidence that it will properly assign bandwidth and provide the best QOS performance- at least with my network and hardware configuration.
