Bandwidth saver describes how much bandwidth the voice uses. If you set it lower, then it drops the voice quality in order to reduce the bandwidth usage.

The QoS number is supposed to be the same as your upload speed, in order to let the router know how much speed it has available. If your cable can upload at 384kbps, and your computers are trying to send at 400kbps, then the packets all get bunched up in the cable modem, and any voice packets have to wait in line for all the others ahead of it to get sent.

If you tell the router that you have 384kbps available, then it will limit your total speed to be slightly less than that, so that the packets get bunched up in the router instead of the cable modem. That means that the router now has control over the waiting packets, and voice packets are allowed to jump to the head of the line.

So, ideally your QoS number should be 384, but unfortunately the RT31P2 doesn't seem to be very precise about how it limits the speed. In my experience, it seems to slow stuff down more than it should, so 512 might not be a bad choice.

It does kinda suck though... if the RT31P2's QoS limiting acted in a sensical way, then there wouldn't need to be any guesswork. However, that's not the case, and I don't really know what the optimal value is...
