As to your first question when we hooked up our phones we didn't have to disable anything including my firewall and on our network we use Zone Alarm Professional.

My wife hooked it up, I was just discussing this with her. She said it took longer to read the directions then to hook it up. She said all she really did was plug the main unit into our router (linksys WRT54G) and it was ready. I then logged on to the Vonage site and the phone was working no more then 10 minutes later.

I didn't sign a contract, but I think the TOS says there is a cancellation fee. You may want to look at that.
