Vonage As an early adopter of Vonage (as well as an overall technology geek) I've been

As an early adopter of Vonage (as well as an overall technology geek) I've been very much pleased with the savings that we've enjoyed over the last 5 years. The price was right and the aggravation minimal.

90% of the issues that I've had with the service has been due to the cable company's connection and/or hardware (and they didn't think we'd notice when they gave us crappy broadband service).

But overall it's been great. Invited lots of friends and family to join, enjoyed telling people on the phone that our voices were being carried over the internet, not those old crappy copper lines that have been paid for so many times over... For me it was a bit of a religious experience. Being in my mid 30's now, it always bugged me to hear abuses from the big utilities such as forcing customers to pay for touch-tone years after the technology was bought and paid for. Nothing but abuses. The fact that a call to nearby towns cost me more than if I called cross-country. Just doesn't/didn't add up.

For me it was the enjoyment of "stick it to the greedy monopolies" and cutting the cord of Verizon, the grand-daughter to the baby-Bells.

We'll the stakes have changed. I could put up with inconsistant service when my bill was $25'ish. On Sunday, I got my new billing- $30.79.

It all makes sense now. Vonage pushes forward with a grass-roots marketing campaign (an excellent one at that) and picks up all of the POTS dissidents. They partner with companies like Linksys to package Vonage with hardware. Then they go public... a bad bad thing. The fate of decisions, those days of risk that made Vonage such a unique company are gone, so are the benefits of reasonable pricing. Do you think Vonage is going to battle the FCC being public now? I don't think so.

They should battle the FCC on this one. It's ridiculous to force a fledgling technology to subsidize running some crappy DSL line out to the middle of the country (an example here), especially since there is still spare bandwidth on the majority of the fiber backbone in the US. It's absurd and an insult to our intelligence. Why is the cable TV bill so high? Was this also a result of the wonderful assistance provided by the Universal Service Fee. It reeks of mismanagment, unaccountability, and overall just plain abuse. I'm keeping a close eye on how Vonage handles these recent developments.

My invoice from Vonange has been steadily climbing since I joined on in February

Yep...the Feds have discovered VoIP. Did you really think they were going to let
The Fed Universal Serv Tax is new this month. I rec'd the bill October 4 so I am guessing
I agree that taxes on POTS and VOIP cancel each other and VOIP wins on lower net cost.
Why is Vonage contributing the Universal Service Fund (USF)? "The FCC recently
In the UK we dont seem to have this issue, I pay a straight £7.99/mo ($15.50/mo approx)
Is VAT included in the 7.99?
Thanks for the information about the Universal Service Act. I was not suggesting
Yes, but the cost differential between POTS and VOIP is quickly narrowing. Not
