Vonage As a phone adapter, I've found the WRTP54G to be first rate. It is still affected

As a phone adapter, I've found the WRTP54G to be first rate. It is still affected by the Caller ID issues others have reported, but the voice quality is excellent, etc.

However, as a router, I cannot recommend the WRTP54G. It is, to say the least, "delicate". If it gets used heavily in any way (for example, P2P), it tends to slow down, then lock up, requiring a reboot. Since the firmware and SSH sections of the WRTP54G are locked down, you can't make any configuration changes to improve this like you could on a WRT54G or WRT54GS.

There are, however, a few workarounds that can make the WRTP54G work a little better. Hopefully, one of them will help you out.

1. Do not forward ports or set up anything in the DMZ for heavy load applications.

Forwarding ports on the WRTP54G is the fastest way to get it to crash and burn under heavy load. Yes, I know it's needed for gaming, and desirable for P2P. It would probably work fine for gaming, but even P2P locked down to 20 simultaneous connections will bring the WRTP54G to its knees in a few hours. Or less.

2. Disable DNS proxy

The DNS proxy on the WRTP54G is OK, but hey, you need that memory for other stuff, and it doesn't hold up very well after a few days or a week. Disable it, and while you're at it key your ISP's DNS entries into the DHCP setup on the router so your clients can get their own DNS directly.

3. Disable QoS.

Turning on QoS on a WRTP54G makes no difference on voice quality for the WRTP54G in my experience. You have to manage your other applications manually so you can "reserve" 90K for Vonage anyway (or if you have bandwidth saver turned on, whatever bandwidth you need). So you're wasting valuable WRTP54G memory having it turned on.

4. Throttle your P2P

If you must port forward, then keep your connections to below about 20, and throttle your upload bandwidth. You'll have to play with what works on your setup.

5. Get out your wallet.

Vonage's official response to me is to upgrade my cable modem to a DOCSIS 2.0 unit. That is as far as I got with Customer Service (when they discovered that my modem is DOCSIS 1.0). However, it is fair to point out, I think, that the WRTP54G worked just great on the very same DOCSIS 1.0 modem (Linksys BEFCMU10 V2), on two ISP's (Adelphia and SusCom) until I got the 1.00.52 "Firmware Release From Hell" on my WRTP54G.

Spending $75 on a new Motorola SurfBoard (which my cable company cannot upgrade because they only support an odd brand of modem) or a new modem from my cable company (which will probably be obsolete soon since my cable company is being bought out by Comcast) to replace my BEFCMU10 v2 (which my cable company cannot upgrade to DOCSIS 1.1, see above) seems unlikely to fix something that wasn't broken five weeks ago.

When I told the CS rep (a week ago) that my WRTP54G worked just fine until the firmware upgrade, he still insisted that I needed to buy a new modem. He finally agreed to send the ticket on to Engineering, but told me it would probably be rejected due to my "incompatible modem", but that I would get a call within 24 hours in either case. No calls yet.

Your other option is to purchase a WRT54G or WRT54GS or other router and place it in front of your WRTP54G, then relegate the WRTP54G to Vonage duty only.
