As a brand new Vonage customer, I received my D-Link VTA phone adapter today. It was a breeze to attach it to my WRT54GS router and HOME phone(s); I tried an older VTech 5.8GHz base and a brand new Uniden 5.8GHz base with four handsets and they all worked. The WRT54GS has the following computers connected:
1) my laptop connected via wireless all the time for home office use. Main uploading application is Lotus Notes, though most uploading occurs when bringing up Notes in the morning.
2) desktop PC connected via ethernet cable. This is usually in sleep mode.
3) two other laptops very rarely attached via wireless (usually just for email, iTunes, etc.), no real upload activity.

I tried some rudimentary testing of my new Vonage line by calling my business line and having it roll automatically into its voicemail. I spoke for 30 seconds or so from each handset to test the upload capability. When I listened to the recorded messages left from the different bases and handsets, I was a little disappointed. Some of the recorded messages were almost as good as they would be from my home's POTS connections. However, there was some clipping (sometimes barely noticeable, sometimes more distinct) in each of the calls.

The first thing I did was run the Vonage Voip speed test. Here are the results:

download: 4 to 5 Mbps
upload: pretty consistently near 375 Kbps
QoS: upper 90s
Roundtrip: ~50ms
Max pause: 50-200 ms
Avg. jitter: ~5ms
Packet loss: near zero

This would seem to indicate that I should have NO problem with clipping on the uploaded conversations. Thus, my concern with the "minor" clipping encountered. Would/could the new VTA adapter have anything to do with that? Would the firmware level in the router (unchanged since initial setup ~18 months ago) make a difference? I am considering a second Vonage contract for my home office phone, having that phone connected to the second port on the VTA, so I have to get the "warm fuzzies" over this initial setup first.

It's supposed to take 20+ days to switch my home POTS number to Vonage (I think) and I just signed up two days ago. So, I am interested in other testing and tuning recommendations from the experts in the interim! I'm a little scared at the thought of putting 3rd party firmware in the WRT54GS to get adequate QoS for Voip (as some older forum entries suggest), but if it absolutely makes a difference, I'll do it.

Suggestions welcome!

I'd start by temporarily connecting the adapter directly to the modem and repeating
