Vonage Reviews

Vonage As I've read in other posts ppl have been having trouble using the DMZ and Port Forwarding.

As I've read in other posts ppl have been having trouble using the DMZ and Port Forwarding. Whenever I choose to configure a LAN Client as is required by the interface it says "Error on page". I tried loads of permuations trying to get past whatever error. There's only so many ways you can enter a mac address. Anyhow, I did find a solution to my problem and figured I'd offer it to others.

Prior to connecting my VWR to my network, all my sharing was done through a Server. I seem to have problems running router/nat devices as they always have firmware issues or they lock up whenever you send excessive amounts of data through DMZs and port forwarders. I route a lot of traffic into my house doing various things. Anyhow, I removed the Vonage VWR from the front of my network and put it behind my server and now things are working great. It was a bit of a challenge because you have to create a separate network segment so that you can access the configuration screens through your web-browser. Basically, the Internet Port and LAN ports on the Vonage device can't be on the same network segment. The web interface won't let you do it. My home network is configured on 192.168.31.x and my server is the gateway for the network. I added a second IP address to my desktop computer (basically the default that came with the device) which is 192.168.15.2. I then changed the IP on the LAN side of the VWR from 192.168.31.1 to 192.168.15.1. Since the device is no longer plugged into my cable modem I turned off the NAT and Firewall. Subsequentlly, I changed my servers address back to 192.168.31.1 and reenabled internet sharing (NAT) on it. I then changed the VWR's WAN IP address to 192.168.31.2, subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway of my server address which is 192.168.31.1. I also set the DNS server to 192.168.31.1. I rebooted the Vonage VWR and now it is going through the NAT (internet sharing) on my server. My server is once again firewalled and I am free to open ports to have fun with and my VRW device is still working and sounds clear. Other than this, I'm happy with the Vonage service. If the power goes out I guess I'm going to have to wait for my server to boot back up to make phone calls.

Good luck. Hopefully the update the firmware on this device so ppl can use DMZ, port fowarding and don't have to go through this much of a work around.

Regards,
Eric

Unable to DMZ or Port Forward from Vonage D-Link VWR

PS. I also had to run two separate ethernet cables from the vonage device to another
