Although as some of you may already know I do loathe Bell Canada, they did have a feature that was pretty cool that I have not seen anywhere else. They called it "Call Privacy". Here's how it worked:

If an anonymous call came into your line, the call would be intercepted. A recorded announcement would say:

"The party you are calling subscribes to Call Privacy. Please press the pound (#) key to unblock your number, and your call will go through. If you wish to enter another number, press star (*) following by your number including area code."

When the call came into my phone, and the caller pressed #, I would see on the display:

If they keyed the number manually by pressing * first, I would see:

An asterisk would be seen after the words CALL PRIVACY to indicate that the person keyed the number manually. This is helpful if you are calling from some other phone that the called party would not recognize. You can key in your home number so that they know it was you.

You could also setup a family 3-digit pass code. As soon as the caller hears the recorded message stating the Call Privacy feature, they would immediately press the 3-digit code and the call would go through. The call display would show:

When you see the 111-111-1111, you know it is someone calling with the family pass code.

The other really cool feature about this was the ability to ALWAYS allow certain private numbers to ring through. For example, my friend Debbie had a cell phone with a permanently blocked number. I use the feature code *11, which prompted me to set the number of an allowable caller to get through so that they would not be bothered with the Call Privacy blurb. When Debbie called, even though her number was blocked, I could see her number on my screen because I specifically coded her number as one of the allowable numbers. It would show this:

That is not really her number, but you get the idea. This feature was highly advanced, and completely reduced nuisance calls and calls from tele-marketers. I do miss it as now when Debbie or any other friend calls from a blocked number, I have no idea as to who is calling. Anonymous callers totally defeat the Call Display feature.

This may have been a feature strictly used by Bell Canada. I know in the US there is a similar feature, but it is not as advanced. It requires you to speak your name, and then the system calls you with that. It's much easier if you can program allowable numbers into your system, and then see them on your display when they call without any interruption.

I managed to freak out a couple of people. They called me and I answered stating, "Hi David!". He wondered how in the world I knew it was him calling. He was unaware of the Call Privacy feature at the time and was worried that his number was not really blocked. I guess when calling me, his number could never be blocked!

It would be fabulous if Vonage had this feature.
