Vonage Also don't forget that number portability is rather new for everybody out there.

Also don't forget that number portability is rather new for everybody out there. The government finally agreed on a third party agency to handle transfers. But I think you will find that not all companies cooperate. I am not sure if they are required to cooperate, so the problem may be with the POTS. Some of them will do anything to keep you off Voip.

As for me I knew I could not get my number. Not because I contacted Vonage. I knew it all depended on Verizon, my old local POTS provider, and the equipment in the area. Believe it or not, I actually called the Public Service Commission in my state before I even talked to Vonage. They told me that the technology in my LATA did not yet exist for number transfers. (I like living in rural areas). They did tell me that Voip was unregulated but they saw it as the wave of the future. I made this call in July before I signed up in August. The person at the Public Service Commission warned me that I was signing onto a new technology, but based on their research I would be on the cutting edge of the future in communications. If I were willing to suffer a few headaches now I would save a LOT of money and be some of the early users of the newest technology.

So, in the end I could not get a local number. I got Vonage's toll free number option which is about $5.00 a month for local phone calls. I have not yet went over the 100 allotted minutes. In fact I have not even used 10 minutes yet. If it looks like a long phone call I always just call the person back. I find that to be little trouble to save mega dollars.

The issue I would not be able to resolve is why you would order broadband ISP just to get Voip for them. In my case I already had broadband for other uses and there was no incremental cost. Time Warner is about $44 per month. Add Vonage and you are over $50 per month. If your parents weren't making long distance calls then I am not sure where the advantage even lies. But, if they were making long distance calls then they stand to save a bundle. I cut my costs over $150 a month. I'll stay on hold a little longer for $150.

I hate you had this terrible experience. I also don't really like the idea of how a lot of service calls are handled with a lot of technology companies these days. It seems they always follow a script until you get further up the chain. But, then again, you are paying a lot less money. You can always pay more, but I was finding my POTS wasn't much better at service than most of the complaints I hear on this forum. The last time my POTS line got pulled down by a truck the repair crew came out and looked at the pole for 45 minutes, left and didn't return for several days despite my calls from my work phone and a payphone down the street.

I hope you can get this resolved. Unfortunately the best we can do for you is give you a place to vent. Hang in there.
