Vonage Alrighty. I got my Linksys RT31P2 in the mail yesterday and hooked everything



Alrighty. I got my Linksys RT31P2 in the mail yesterday and hooked everything up as soon as I got home from work. I guess I will start by showing you how I have things setup.

cable modem - linksys cable/dsl router 4-port switch - d-link switch - 2 computers + Vonage RT31P2 router.

I have the RT31P2 tapped into the d-link switch and it is all by itself, I do not need it to do anything other than act as a phone port. The first thing I did was plug it in via the WAN port and did not configure anything inside the firmware as I was thinking it wouldnt matter since nothing else would ever be connected to it. It syncs to the network just fine and my phone port lights up and I get a dial tone. Everything seems to be working just fine at this point until I start making some calls. I called a friend who lives in another state first, and the voice quality was absolutely perfect, we chatted for about a half hour or so with no problems. About an hour or so later, I notice that my internet connection on all of my computers is rather laggy compared normal and I even did a bandwidth test and it was horrible compared to what I normally get, and at the time of all of this I was not using the phone. Shortly after I start noticing this, the internet connection completely dies. My router by the modem is still working and all of my computers still have ips assigned but just no internet. I log into my router to check the status and there is no WAN ip. I try to refresh the ip and it won't grab one from the modem. Weird huh? Well it gets better because although the internet is down and my routher doesn't even have a WAN ip anymore, the phone still has a dial tone!!! SO that means the Vonage router is still getting outside somehow :? At this point, if I made any calls, my friend could hear me just fine but I couldn't hear them.

I get all frustrated at this point and start resetting the router and the modem and all of that good stuff and it comes back up and it same thing happens, my router won't grap a WAN ip. I give up at this point and go eat dinner and take a break from my network issues. I come back about an hour later and..... IT'S BACK UP! Everything is back up, my router has a WAN ip now and the internet is working on all of the computers so I thought maybe I had a cable issue earlier or something. I make another phone call to my friend, talk for about 40 minutes or so with the voice quality being amazing (even better than my pots) and blammo, I can't hear my friend anymore all of the sudden but she can hear me just fine :? I call her back a few times and have her call me and same thing keeps happening. For shits and giggles I check my computer's internet connection and wouldn't ya know, it was down again. Checked the router and no WAN ip. Phone still has a ringtone but as I said, I can't hear the other person at this point :?

I've come to the conclusion that my Vonage router is causing these problems but don't have a clue how to fix it. The only other thing I tried was I turned everything off in the firmware to try to make it act more like a switch rather than a router and I even turned off dhcp and gave it a static ip. Same exact thing kept happening to the network.

By the way everytime I mentioned "router" above it is referring to my existing linksys router and not my new Vonage router.

If any of you have any ideas, please let me know!

I've had a similar problem where I could not get a new ip from the router, the internet
I'm definitely not going to rule out the possibility of my isp having problems
Have you tried moving your phone adapter after your cable modem?
Can you verify that all is still OK if you eliminate the Vonage router for a while?
It is my vonage router. I've disconnected it from the network completely and waited
Hmmm... I have a slightly similar problem. My setup is cable modem->RT31P2->Switch.
Have you considered placing the RT31P2 directly between the cable modem and the
