All right folks... here goes.
I pride myself on performing as much trouble shooting on my own before I ask for help, but I am completely stumped on this one. I hope I am just missing something very easy to fix my problem, but here goes:
Got my new HP 7210 OfficeJet a few days ago and was excited to get rolling. The main purpose for the purchase was to fax signed documents occasionally and make a few copies here and there.
Set up was a breeze and everything worked great until I tried to send that first fax... and nothing. :(
So, I began my troubleshooting by completing the following steps (not necessarily in this order):
- Skimmed the manual (painful... I hate manuals) and it was worthless
- Hooked a telephone up to the phone jack for the fax and it worked fine
- Plugged the telephone into the EXT jack on the back of the 7210, phone still worked fine
- Check to make sure my telephone cord is only 2-wire (even though it was the cord supplied with the until)
- Left the phone on speaker as I tried to send a fax... the dial tone seemed to drop off and then come back when I cancelled the fax... Hmmm...
- Actually READ a section of the manual :x still worthless
- Started browsing forums... seem to be getting some good suggestions (e.g. turn off ECM, set baud rate to slow, dial *99, don't fax to eFax numbers, etc.). None of which seem to correct the issue
- Decide to run the Fax Test tool and gets passes on Hardware test, connected to an active phone jack, phone cord connected, but fails on Dial Tone detected and fax line condition test followed by the following statement, "Your fax line has a weak signal. A dial tone was not detected."
- Now I'm getting frustrated. My house is Cat5 wired and my router and Vonage box is in the mechanical room in the basement. So, I unplug the 7210, take it down to the basement and plug it directly in to Line1 on the Vonage box
Still nothing...
- So, I turn on auto answer and decide to call from my cell. Low and behold the 7210 rings, picks up and responds to my series of strange whistles (as my family looks at me like I am very "weird")
So, in summary, it would appear that I can receive faxes, but not send them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• If you can, take the machine somewhere where you can try it out with a regular POTS
• What if I have referred all my friends to Vonage and no one has land lines any more???
• You bought the machine new? Most stores will let you return things or exchange
