According to rosy621 above, his ATA is "right up front," plugged into his modem, and he/she still has problems with "crackling." (I refer to this as stuttering audio, often very noticeable when outbound calls are ringing.)
With so many people posting about the same problem, there must be some underlying cause. It's not user-error... it's a real problem! It's especially odd that so many users with this problem (including me) describe it as starting recently after months of fine service.
I usually give Vonage the benefit of the doubt. Assuming it was Comcast not giving me the bandwidth I need, I've run various speed tests. Time and time again my connection rates beyond the stated minimum speed 1.5/384.
Vonage MUST have experts in this area. Where is the drop out most-likely happening? Is it just packet loss across the web that Vonage can do nothing about? If so, I can see why Vonage wouldn't want to publicize this because it would seem to be a huge shortcoming to their product.
As a Vonage fan I am willing to tolerate a little imperfection. Still, Vonage would do itself a great service by being very forthcoming and helpful. Many of its clients are early-adopters of technology and are willing to put up with some shortcomings provided their causes are understood.
I'd like to see a post from a Vonage tecnician stating "Crackling/stuttering is a real problem. The most likely causes of crackling are the following: ...etc"
