Vonage After lurking in the forums for a couple weeks I have finally ordered and received

After lurking in the forums for a couple weeks I have finally ordered and received my Vonage equipment (Motorola vt1005). I run a web server that serves up images for a gaming group (wargaming miniatures not p0rn) so QoS was something I really wanted implemented. Unfortunately the "pass-through" super secret undocumented mode did not work for my setup. In addition I have a netgear WRG614v3 which did not play nice with the ATA behind the router. So I embarked on getting things set up with the ATA back out in front. Here is what I had to do get things working.

First you will need a PC with a Ethernet card (not wireless) to configure your ATA.

Configure ATA
1) Verify your PC is set to DHCP on the Ethernet port you will use - alternatively set your IP address manually to 192.168.102.x (x = anything other than 1) with a subnet of 255.255.255.0
2) Plug your PC into the PC port on the ATA
3) Open a browser to http://192.168.102.1
4) Setup up your ATAs basic config as per needed for your ISP. Mine I setup up for obtaining everything from the ISP. Now
5) Configure your ATAs advanced settings to turn on NAT/DHCP
6) Optionally configure any ports you want to pass through to a server inside your routers to ip address 192.168.102.2
7) Plug your ATA's WAN port into your cable modem.
8) Reset cable modem and ATA
9) Open a browser to http://192.168.102.1
10) Write down the DNS Servers ip addresses listed

Configure Router
1) Verify your PC is set to DHCP on the Ethernet port you will use - you may also hard code your IP address as appropriate for an already configured router
2) Plug your PC into your router (or connect with your wireless card)
3) Open up your routers admin screens (varies by router)
4) Configure your routers WAN port to hard code IP address 192.168.102.2 subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.102.1
5) Configure your routers LAN to use ip address beginning with 192.168.x where x is anything other than 102
6) Configure your routers DNS server to the DNS server ip addresses you wrote down earlier
7) Configure any port forwarding for servers as necessary (note that only port forwards that were also set up the ATA will work)

Wire / Reboot everything
1) Unplug your cable modem, ATA, and router
2) Connect your cable mode to the WAN port on your ATA
3) Connect your ATA PC port to the WAN port on your router
4) Turn on your cable modem
5) Once your cable modem is online and ready turn on the ATA
6) Once the ATA is on and ready turn on your router

You should now be able to surf and receive calls. You can also get to the ATA configuration screen by surfing to http://192.168.102.1 from any pc on your LAN now. I have tested my works VPN (Cisco client which should be IPSEC) through my system and it works fine.

One step I would recommend is after everything is working is to run a shields up scan (www.grc.com). You may need to route some ports on your ATA to a non existent 192.168.102.x ip address.

Craig
