Actually, in the case of the WRTP54G / RTP300, I think they are just trying to get too many things going on the processor and memory that are present. The box is trying to be a "jack of all trades" and ends up working very well for lighter/casual loads, but is a "master of none".
Let's face it, BitTorrent is HARD on your Internet connection. In my case, the WRTP54G has (or at least had, as of the 1.00.52 release) the "known Linksys bug" of keeping idle connections open for 5 days. BitTorrent was creating so many new connections and "forgetting" about them, and the router was keeping them open for so long, that the iptables on the router simply filled up! This is not an uncommon issue with "consumer" routers - even the native linksys firmware on their venerable WRT54G line has the issue.
I got a Linux based WRT54G V4 (now known as the "WRT54GL") and loaded up some aftermarket firmware that gave me access to the Linux kernel, and between the manual QoS upstream settings and the ability to adjust that idle connection timeout to something more reasonable (4 hours, in my case), I now have a router that is up, under full BitTorrent load, with working QoS, for months at a time. It has never failed once since I installed it.
