Actually, I agree with some of you, and disagree with others.

I also feel that a "HARDWARE" Firewall/NAT Router is the best choice for most people....especially seeing as how the Vonage box acts as a router. If you have 1 NIC....that is the way to go...no doubt. And also use the Windows firewall for "extra" protection.

However........I've got Zone Alarm Pro 6....which allows you to set a lot of VERY specific rules, (almost like a hardware firewall), yet still protects my system just as well as a hardware firewall. I use ZA Pro not only for the firewall, but also for anti-spam, anti-adware, and also Virus Scanning (although I do not use this feature...I use NOD32 instead.) Anyway, the point is, ZA Pro does the job of SEVERAL different utilities...and thus in the end...uses fewer resources.

Also, I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor, so I've got 1 CPU CORE dedicated to system processes such as the firewall, along with 2 GB of RAM....so resources aren't much of an issue. And...using the 2 NICS with QoS still lets me get my 4 Megabits from my ISP while having my Vonage quality set at the highest quality with never 1 issue.

Now...I KNOW not everyone has 2 NICS....and not EVERYONE has a dual-core CPU. BUT......Considering those 2 points null and void, Zone Alarm is an excellent Firewall....especially the free version. Read some reviews. I'm not saying it is the BEST....Nor am I saying EVERYONE should use it.....but I've used it for YEARS now along with NAT firewalling and I've never had a major issue.

I suppose it is really a matter or preference, security, user friendliness and features/ability.

Please....use what you feel is best for your system. I just simply wanted to share my experience with getting ZA to work with Vonage on a Dual-NIC system......
