A potential need for an up-front router may be the lack of adequate memory and processing power in these Vonage/Linksys combo routers to really do the multiple jobs they are touted for. For instance, the WRTP54G is well known to have had trouble updating its firmware while wireless was turned on.

I currently have the D-Link connected to FIOS and a WRTP54G and WRT54GX4 connected behind it. This gives me several potential benefits:

1. Greater protection of home network and PCs, and they now sit behind two NAT routers. I understand that this slows things down a tad, but I am still getting 13-14 Mb/sec effective speeds, so obviously not a biggee.

2. Internal traffic on home network does not impact upon Voip service. It is entirely isolated within the WRT54GX4.

3. WRT54GX4 has superior wireless performance than WRTP54G, and also allows the WRTP to concentrate on just Voip (yes, I could have put a PAP into this configuration, but this is how it turned out).

Very happy with setup for the most part. I have been getting a number of disconnects both before and after I made this config change, but suspect either that Vonage is swamped by new customers or a problem in the .58 firmware. I still need to look into this situation more closely.
