Vonage A friend of mine called me tonight from his Bell Canada phone line. He has been chatting

A friend of mine called me tonight from his Bell Canada phone line. He has been chatting with me (a lot) lately about switching from Bell Canada to a Voip phone system because he has had so many problems with Bell, and also wanted to reduce the cost of his phone service. After looking at Vonage Canada and Primus Canada, he decided to go with Primus Canada because they are $11.55 per month (incl. taxes) cheaper for the unlimited package. That is a savings of $138.60 per year! He took the Primus $29.95 deal, instead of Vonage's $39.99, which basically gives him the same thing - unlimited US/Canada calling, and boot load of features.

However, already he has found a technical problem, and it is related to my Vonage telephone number for whatever reason. We are not sure at this time if the problem is originating with Vonage or with Primus. He thought I must have cancelled my Vonage service because he has not been able to call me since he got his Primus Talkbroadband. When he dials my Vonage number, a recording comes on stating "We're sorry, your call cannot be completed as dialled. Please check the number and dial again!"

He can call any other number here locally, including my cell phone number, but he cannot dial my Vonage line via Primus. I mentioned to him that I have a Vonage Virtual Number in Halifax. I gave him that number and asked him to try it. Low and behold - it worked. He was able to ring my phone when dialling my Vonage Canada Halifax number. He tried my Vonage Ottawa number and once again received the recording stating that my number was not in service. I believe this is likely a problem with Primus following an incorrect path to my Ottawa number. Three of my friends here in the Ottawa region are with Vonage. I asked him to call them as a test to see if maybe all Ottawa Vonage numbers were affected, and he was able to get through to both of them. It is strictly with my phone number that he is blocked. How odd! He called Primus and they said they would create a service ticket and look into it. I will let you know if there are any updates to this. My friend can still contact me through his Bell line, but once his number is fully ported to Primus he will no longer have his Bell line.

He was able to setup his D-Link ATA to automatically route my phone number through his Bell line whenever anyone tries dialling me from his Primus line. The D-Link ATA has some special feature called ACR - Automatic Call Redirection. You can plug another live telephone line into the back of the ATA. You can then go into the D-Link settings and configure it to use the alternate line when dialling certain numbers. That is pretty cool! The other thing that impressed me was that no matter if a call comes in to his new Primus line or his old Bell line, all of his phones ring. The D-Link ATA looks after routing the calls to the same telephones no matter where the call comes from. He routed 911 through to his Bell line because he felt it was a better 911 system than Primus'. It is cool that you can program the ATA to use an alternate phone system to complete "specific" calls.

Does anyone know if the LinkSys ATA that Vonage uses does this? I know that my Motorola box is not capable of this setup.
